With all the tech specs, audiophile speak, and Trekkie-headphone language, it may seem difficult to just find a great pair of headphones that sound delicious for a wide variety of applications. All of that garbage aside, I can tell you that I have found your fix. The Grado SR225e headphones are an excellent choice for music lovers beginning their foray into audiophile-dom. They are an exceptionally versatile set of cans that sounds incredible with portable music/DVD devices, as well as with a high end stereo system.

The SR225e feature the signature retro Grado appearance - closed ear foam cups, open backs, plastic/metal casing and a vinyl headband. The sound is signature Grado, as well – amazing. The e drivers are “improved,” and although Grado’s sound is so phenomenal it is difficult to imagine improvements, the bass is markedly better. The sound is already superior, but the bass is simply astonishing. I cannot imagine a better value; I would venture to say that, to find a sound system with this dynamic, rich sound, it will run you about $3,000. Tell your kids’ college educations adios. Or invest in the Grado’s for $200 and make the little money mongers buy a used book or two this semester. With the Grado SR 225e, everyone wins!

Ok so the bad? They are portable in the sense that you can carry them around with you. They are not comfortably portable. The open backs release sound that may or may not annoy innocent bystanders at work or on public transportation. And the cable – whew – lets just say that thing is akin to Spiderman’s little webbing that he uses to swing from buildings. It’s heavy and a pain in the rear to carry everywhere. Then there’s the added bonus of looking a fool in these big ole’ things, and the added weight of a portable headphone amp (you’re wasting your money if you want to listen to MP3’s without one). They are also not the most comfortable (if you know Grado, you’ll know this is pretty standard).

However, in light of all the teeny, tiny flaws, I wouldn'’t go back. These things are incredible, and one of the best values on the market (especially for Grados, which generally tend to be expensive). A little discomfort is a very small concession to make for exceptional sound.

This headphone has closer matched drivers and an improved rear screen that increases airflow by 50%. Sound: Closer driver tolerances helps enlarged the sound stage while the more open rear screen helps free the headphones of colorations. The SR225e offers excellent value for the dollar like all Grado headphones.
